Travel While You Are Pregnant

First things first. When you are pregnant the very first thing you need to do is make an appointment with your Ob-Gyn or family Doctor and find out how they feel about you traveling. With a green light the next step is finding travel insurance which will cover you. That can be a bit more of a challenge. Most travel insurance companies will view pregnancy as a pre-existing condition and will also label you as ‘high risk’. Now, that said most providers will insure you at least up to 9 weeks before your baby is due. Within 9 weeks you are definitely considered high risk and will probably have a hard time getting any coverage. As with any kind of insurance it’s always vital to read your policy and have a clear understanding of the exclusions particularly around pre-existing conditions. By way of example here’s a Canadian Travel Insurance Pre-Existing Conditions and Pregnancy statement:

Manulife Insurance

Says, you are excluded from coverage if, “Your routine pre-natal care, your pregnancy or childbirth, complications of your pregnancy or childbirth when they happen in the nine (9) weeks before or after the expected date of delivery.”

I find that is a pretty generic statement for most insurers. Some may go to eight weeks but most say nine.

I’m Pregnant and traveling to the USA from Canada

Can I get Health Insurance while I’m Pregnant?

I will be 8 months pregnant in March 2008. At the time we are supposed to be in Florida for a holiday we booked months ago. Flying down there is obviously out of the question. What are your thoughts on driving to Florida? Is it even a good idea to be going outside of the country so close to my due date? (We live in Manitoba, Canada – it’s a long drive!) What happens if I did go into labour while I’m in the USA? Would my travel insurance cover all the expenses? Maybe this is a bad idea and we should just cancel our vacation….any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Thx in advance icon smile Travel Insurance Pregnant
Pregnant and Needing a Vacation!

I would check with your insurance to find out what coverage you would have during pregnancy while traveling in the USA. If you are driving, it would be okay, but at 8months you probably aren’t going to want (or have the bladder capacity) to sit in the car for a long ride.

Also, you are going to want to be careful about your travel insurance. Be sure to ask specifically about your pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. If you find any travel insurance deals be sure to read the fine print and make certain you disclose your pregnancy to them prior to buying the policy. If they say they are going to insure you for the trip – get it in writing!

I know this may not sound much like an alternative for a nice warm vacation but you may want to consider a visit to Toronto now. You will be able to take comfort in knowing you are fully covered plus you will be close to some of the finest maternity hospitals in North America. Maybe save your Florida vacation to beat the post partum blues!

Travel Insurance Pre Existing Conditions

Travel Insurance with Pre Existing Conditions

In general, when you are travelling and you experience a medical emergency which is caused by a pre-existing condition you will not be covered. One of the first things to know is, ‘What exactly is a pre-existing condition? How is it defined by the travel insurance company? A pre-existing condition is a physical or mental condition that has already been diagnosed by a licensed physician prior to your trip (note: the amount of time since the diagnosis was made can vary from insurance company to insurance company so read the fine print) Also, the condition is established as a ‘medical condition’ and it has not been stable before you leave or you started taking meds or you have already started a treatment for your condition (again length of time prior to departure varies by company.)

There are some travel insurance companies that offer coverage for emergencies due to a pre-existing condition.

As well as pre-existing conditions, there are other conditions or circumstances that are fit in the ‘exclusions’ part of most travel insurance policies. These include: self-inflicted injuries; pregnancy; childbirth; injuries from playing contact sports or undertaking high-risk activities like diving; drugs or alcohol abuse; criminal activity; acts of war; and travel to a country where there has been prior notice issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs advising citizens from your country not to travel the place you are considering. Here’s a question about Travel Insurance for a Pre Existing Condition:

High-risk health insurance or gov’t aid for severe pre-existing condition?

I am a 30-year-old US citizen who has been living outside the US. I have end-stage colon cancer, and I suspect no normal health insurance provider will ensure me because my pre-existing condition means I am not so much a risk at this point as a definite cost.

I want to visit Toronto and my friends and family in the US (just for a few weeks), but if something should happen and I need medical attention, I’m afraid my life savings will be drained by a single surgery. Is there any kind of temporary high-risk insurance or government program you know of that I might qualify for? My health insurance in this country will not extend to the US, and I think the travel medical insurance in this country is only available to citizens of this country (though I will look into that).

Thanks in advance.

Very true, they won’t.

You could try purchasing travel insurance, but it won’t cover anything related to a preexisting condition.

The only high risk health insurance you can buy in the USA, is only available for people who live here. Many states have a “high risk health pool”, sometimes the waiting list to get on it, is YEARS. But again, you have to live here, to get it.

But if you’re end stage, that means your dying . . . and you probably shouldn’t be traveling.
