Travel Insurance Pregnant

Travel While You Are Pregnant
First things first. When you are pregnant the very first thing you need to do is make an appointment with your Ob-Gyn or family Doctor and find out how they feel about you traveling. With a green light the next step is finding travel insurance which will cover you. That can be a bit more of a challenge. Most travel insurance companies will view pregnancy as a pre-existing condition and will also label you as ‘high risk’. Now, that said most providers will insure you at least up to 9 weeks before your baby is due. Within 9 weeks you are definitely considered high risk and will probably have a hard time getting any coverage. As with any kind of insurance it’s always vital to read your policy and have a clear understanding of the exclusions particularly around pre-existing conditions. By way of example here’s a Canadian Travel Insurance Pre-Existing Conditions and Pregnancy statement:
Manulife Insurance
Says, you are excluded from coverage if, “Your routine pre-natal care, your pregnancy or childbirth, complications of your pregnancy or childbirth when they happen in the nine (9) weeks before or after the expected date of delivery.”
I find that is a pretty generic statement for most insurers. Some may go to eight weeks but most say nine.
Travel Insurance Pregnancy
I’m Pregnant and traveling to the USA from Canada
Can I get Health Insurance while I’m Pregnant?
I will be 8 months pregnant in March 2008. At the time we are supposed to be in Florida for a holiday we booked months ago. Flying down there is obviously out of the question. What are your thoughts on driving to Florida? Is it even a good idea to be going outside of the country so close to my due date? (We live in Manitoba, Canada – it’s a long drive!) What happens if I did go into labour while I’m in the USA? Would my travel insurance cover all the expenses? Maybe this is a bad idea and we should just cancel our vacation….any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Thx in advance ![]()
Pregnant and Needing a Vacation!
I would check with your insurance to find out what coverage you would have during pregnancy while traveling in the USA. If you are driving, it would be okay, but at 8months you probably aren’t going to want (or have the bladder capacity) to sit in the car for a long ride.
Also, you are going to want to be careful about your travel insurance. Be sure to ask specifically about your pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. If you find any travel insurance deals be sure to read the fine print and make certain you disclose your pregnancy to them prior to buying the policy. If they say they are going to insure you for the trip – get it in writing!
I know this may not sound much like an alternative for a nice warm vacation but you may want to consider a visit to Toronto now. You will be able to take comfort in knowing you are fully covered plus you will be close to some of the finest maternity hospitals in North America. Maybe save your Florida vacation to beat the post partum blues!
